Biography
Dr. Curt Davidson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environment and Society at Utah State University and Director of the Sustainable Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Lab (SORTL). Based in Moab, his work focuses on the social dimensions of outdoor recreation and tourism in a changing climate.
Curt's path began in experiential education, where he studied how outdoor challenges foster leadership, character, and personal growth. This foundation led to broader questions about how time in nature influences behavior, values, and emotional well-being. Today, his research explores how outdoor experiences shape climate perceptions, decision-making, and mental health, particularly among students, guides, and land users.
Through applied research and field-based programs, Curt develops tools for recreation and tourism professionals to adapt to environmental change, reduce barriers to participation, and design more inclusive, resilient systems. His recent projects include studies on air quality and recreation decisions, climate-informed park planning, and pre-trip anxiety in adventure education. He also created the Behavioral First Responder course to support mental and emotional preparedness in outdoor settings.
Dr. Davidson holds a PhD from Indiana University Bloomington and brings over a decade of experience in outdoor education and public lands work. He welcomes collaboration with students, educators, and partners committed to advancing the future of sustainable, meaningful outdoor experiences.
